Q. What do I have to do to successfully complete my qualification?
A. Establish support from your employer to help you with your learning. Also; understand how the learning will be arranged and take responsibility to learn and work with your employer to achieve completion. Build a good working relationship and respect with your Turf Manager and/or Workplace Assessor to help you learn the skills required on the job. Understand what it is that you are signing up for. Ask as many questions as you like to make sure you understand what you are making a commitment to.
Q. Who is going to train me on the job?
A. Your Turf Manager. This person needs to have the qualifications and experience to help you learn.
Q. Who assesses me on my workplace skills?
A. Your Workplace Assessor. This person needs to have the qualifications and experience to assess you and also needs to be a registered and approved assessor by the ITO.
Q. What should my employer do to support me?
A. Set you up right at the beginning. Help you succeed; provide you with regular opportunities to ask questions and get help with your learning and assessments. Provide on-job training and regular opportunities to have your on-job skills assessed. Help you with your off-job training where possible. Help you complete.
Q. Who can I contact if I need help?
A. In the first instance the person that you report to. The ITO is also here to help you out and provide you with support.
Q. Is there a course that you can do that would help to get a job in the industry?
A. No, you need to be employed or a volunteer within the industry in order to train. It sometimes helps to work on a volunteer basis as a way to get ‘your foot in the door’.
Q. Is there an age limit to be an apprentice?
A. To be a Modern Apprentice and qualify for the quarterly support visits from a Modern Apprenticeship Coordinator (MAC), you need to be between the ages of 16 – 21.However, and anyone (of any age) can be an apprentice, all you need is an employer whop is willing to support you.
Q. How can the NZSTITO help me get a job in the industry?
A. Contact the NZSTITO who will put you in touch with your regional coordinator. They have contacts and knowledge of the potential employers in your area and may know of some leads.
Q. How long does it take to complete the Level 4 National Certificate in Sports Turf Management?
A. On average it will take 3.5 years but you are able to complete this sooner depending on your experience and motivation.
Q. Where do I train?
A. Our training is made up of a mixture of correspondence, on job training with your employer and a one week block course each year (total of three years) primarily based in Palmerton North.
