Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is my involvement?
A. Your role is to support your employee with their learning. Also; understand how the learning will be arranged and to help them achieve completion. Your organisation will assign a Turf Manager and/or Workplace Assessor to help your employee learn the skills required on the job. The Turf Manager and/or Workplace Assessor will regularly support the employee by providing on-job training and assessment. The ITO provides support for your organisation with on-job assessment resources and guides as well as field day workshops for professional development.

Q. How much money do I get when I take on a learner or apprentice?
A. The ITO receives Government funding from the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission). This funding subsidises the cost of training and the fee that you pay is at a subsidised lower rate. The fee charged by the ITO for the qualification is up to 75% lower than the total cost of training. Without Government funding the cost of training would be up to three times the price.

Q. Who pays for this?
A. This is negotiated and agreed to through your individual employment agreement process. Most employers’ pay for 100% of the fee; some pay 50/50; others’ pay 50/50 and when the employee completes will reimburse the 50% that the employee has paid; and others will require the employee to pay for it.

Q. Who can I contact if I need help?
A. The ITO is available to help you with any questions you may have. The person who helped you sign your training agreement is your point of contact.

Q. How can I make sure that the learning is successful?
A. Make a commitment to help your employee with their learning. Understand what the qualification is about and how it will work by asking questions of the ITO. Make sure that you’re Turf Manager and/or Workplace Assessor is also willing to commit and has the appropriate qualifications and experience to help your employee learn. Have regular discussions (informally and formally) about how the learning is progressing. If there are issues or problems discuss them in the first instance between yourselves and if need be involve the ITO. Provide recognition for a job well done and encouragement and motivation to help your employee progress and achieve completion. Invest in your employees’ development and you will see a return for your business; less waste, less errors, tasks done more efficiently, satisfied employees.
