Apprenticeships with the NZ Sports Turf ITO are open to trainees of any age. However, a range of additional support services are available to trainees and their employers where trainees commence their training in the 16 to 21 year age group through Modern Apprenticeships.

Modern Apprenticeships combine the best aspects of traditional Apprenticeships with some fresh thinking for young people. Each Modern Apprentice is assigned a 'Modern Apprenticeships Co-ordinator' who actively supports the trainee and employer throughout the Apprenticeship. The Modern Apprenticeships Co-ordinator can assist in locating and screening potential trainees and administering establishment of training arrangements. The Co-ordinator then acts as a personal mentor to apprentices, developing a personal training plan and reviewing progress against key milestones. With Modern Apprenticeships taking on an apprentice is easier than it has ever been!
