Qualification Overview:

Level 3 The National Certificate in Sports Turf (Intro to Turf Care) Qualification

The National Certificate in Sports Turf (Introduction to Turf Care) Level 3 is an ideal introductory qualification in turf management.

In order to complete the requirements for issue of the National Certificate in Sports Turf (Introduction to Turf Care) Level 3 all trainees must demonstrate competency in a minimum of 48 credits of learning.  This is to be made up of 33 credits of compulsory units (see the list below) and a further 15 credits of elective units. All Credits earned can be credited towards the more advanced National Certificate in Sports Turf Management (Level 4).  Some units can also be credited to qualifications in Amenity Horticulture.

The compulsory content of the course covers basic turf management essentials applicable to all sports turf and amenity areas such as weed, pest and disease management, mowing, planning a fertiliser programme and soil water management.

This certificate can be achieved through completing a series of regionally based training days together with additional reading and practical assignments.  The training days are based in regional centres (according to demand) and are generally run over a period of 12 to 15 months. Training is carried out by NZ Sports Turf Institute agronomists and leading industry practitioners, giving you the very best of applied knowledge.

Correspondence Option

This qualification can also be accomplished through correspondence training with The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand which will be arranged by the NZ Sports Turf Industry Training Organisation.  This method of training will suit trainees who may not have ready access to regional training days and will learn well through correspondence style learning.

A wide variety of elective units may be selected to complete the remaining 15 credit elective when carrying out training by this mechanism.  Elective units may be selected that are accomplished entirely on job, off job, or through a combination of on and off job learning.
